By RAUL GARCIA JR | The Donna News

DONNA — The Donna News caught up with Donna High’s Varsity Football Senior Linebacker, Humberto Leal, and here is what he had to say about looking forward to this year’s season and about himself.

Q: What are you looking forward to the most as a player and teammate for the 2024-25 football season?

A: Helping my team get to the playoffs, leading the defense and to winning that district title.

Q: What do you like most about playing football?

A: The competition and being able to leave it all out on the field and putting my skills to the test.

Q: What’s your best moment you have experienced as a player or teammate on the football field?

A: Making it to playoffs, getting a sack on a 4th down or coming back from a 21-0 game deficit and winning against E-E.

Q: What are your goals as a player and teammate for the 2024-25 football season?

A: I’m really trying my best, and leaving it all out there on the field to help my team reach the playoffs.

Q: How much have you prepared for the football season, and what do you feel you have improved on to help  reach team goals?

A: I improved a lot with strength training, feet work and getting my technique down right.

Q: Tell me about your journey in football?

A: I’ve played football since the 4th grade. I’ve played in DYFL, TYFA, HYFL and always loved the game of football. Being able to go out there with your teammates/brothers and working together to get a win is something’ special that not a lot of people can do and I am grateful to be able to play the game I love. Until now, being able to put my skills to the test is something I’ve been really looking forward to. All the blood sweat and tears I’ve put into this game I wouldn’t change it for a thing because this game has taught me a lot throughout my years of playing and has helped me go through so much. I’ve faced a lot of ups and downs with my personal life but football has always been there to help me get through everything and I’m glad I’m able to make my family proud. Especially, when I’m out on the field.

Q: Talk to us about the love and dedication you have for your high school football team?

A: Growing up here in Donna I’ve always wanted to be a Redskin and watching the Friday Night Lights as a little kid built up the excitement in me, and now I’m here. I have a lot of friends and coaches that I’ve known for a while and grown up with them on the team; I see them not as just teammates but as family and waking up those early mornings for practice or two a days with my team and putting our all into the offseason I wouldn’t change it for a thing. I’m glad I’m able to call myself a Redskin representing that maroon and gold out there under the Friday Night Lights really means something to me.

Q: Tells us something your football coach has said to motivate you to play your best?

A: Play your game, relax, you know what you can do. Go out there and show them, leave it all out there on the field.

Q: What is your favorite play you like to run on offense or defense?

A: My favorite defense is what we call THUNDER.

Q: Can you tell us what it feels like to you when you’re out on your home field and the crowd is cheering so loud for your team?

A: Its really an amazing feeling, its hard to explain walking out of the locker room and seeing the stands packed with thousands of people cheering you on, the energy around you the adrenaline pumping is truly something I will never forget. It’s one of the things I love about Friday Night Lights.

Q: How excited are you about High School Football Friday Night Lights and running out on the field with your team?

Really excited for my senior year and being able to lead my defense and team. I’m really looking forward to push my team to doing the best they can and getting my boys hyped before we run out the tipi and playing at the reservation Bennie La Prade Stadium.
