Donna High football season begins with two-a-day practice

DONNA — The varsity and freshman football players hit the practice field hard this week to prepare for their 2021-22 football season.

The hot sun didn’t slow down the players enthusiasm or roughness on the gridiron as they went through the team preparation drills and game plans.

“We are working and we are trying to see where we are at as a team,” said Donna High Head Coach Mike Gonzales. “We have eight returning players on defense and we have a lot of young guys playing on offense. We are putting it together and the kids are working hard. It’s a pretty hot August, but they are grinding so we are happy with the progress we are at right now.”

With a three way practice match scrimmage coming up in a week between PSJA High and Harlingen High the home team is eager to put their skills to work to bring back a winning tradition for Donna High football as they look get started towards working on their team goals.

The players are meeting twice a day in the mornings and the afternoons for two-a-day practices.

Donna High is coming off a (2-4), (1-3) 2020-21 season recored. Their two wins came against La Joya Palmview 18-17 and Brownsville Veterans Memorial 16-7.

Donna High will take on Donna North on August 27, with a 7 p.m. kickoff at Bennie La Prade Stadium.
