DONNA — Next year Eric Carreon will be running cross country for Butler College in Kansas. Recently Carreon singed his letter of intent to represent the school on a full ride scholarship.
“I’m trying to get my education,” Carreon said. “I reached out to 10 colleges and the Buttler Coach liked my running style.”
Carreon started off as the seventh man on the Donna High cross country team and worked his way up to second man on the lineup.
“I put a lot of effort to get a scholarship,” Carreon said.
During Carreon’s four seasons on the cross country team he qualified for state once, regionals four times and helped the team win the District Championship two times (2018 and 2020) as a four year letterman. His senior season he finished in the to 50 at the State meet.
Buttler College is located in El Dorado, Kansas. He will be coached by Manuel Gonzalez, a Mercedes Early College graduate and cross country runner. He went on to run for Southwestern College before taking the head coaching job at Butler. Butler is a NJCAA Division 1 college.
“The times that he (Carreon) ran were just out of this world,” Gonzalez said of Carreon’s speed. “He has max potential and he’s still young. I can see him as a regional champion.”
