Coach Mike Gonzales’ phone didn’t stop ringing after he announced he was taking over the head coach football job at Donna High on his Twitter account.
He spent hours on the phone being congratulated and being told by his callers they couldn’t wait for the next football season.
Donna High finished its 2019 campaign 3-7 overall and 2-7 in district.
“We’re going to bring back the mentality of Donna High being a power football team,” Gonzales said. “I prepared every day to be ready for an opportunity like this, and when the job opened, I had everything ready.”
The last time Head Coach Mike Gonzales stepped off the Donna High football field he was a district champion.
Gonzales is a graduate of 2001class and he was part of the defensive arm that helped lead Donna High to a 10-0 district championship that season.
And last football season he helped lead the Weslaco East Wildcats to it undefeated 10-0 district championship as a co-defensive coordinator.
“I’m ready to get started,” Gonzales said. “I’m excited and I’m fired up to head back home and lead the athletic programs.”
Gonzales will take charge of the varsity football team, oversee the Donna High athletics and its two feeder schools.
“Being able to come back to the program that molded me — It’s an amazing feeling and I’m fired up to head back home and lead the athletic programs,” Gonzales said.
Last week Gonzales accepted the athletic director’s position and head football coaching role.
“To have the same job as Earl Scott, Dave Evans, Manny Moreno and even Coach Leal is amazing,” Gonzales said. “Those guys were all strict and Bruce Bush was the coach when I was in middle school and Dave Evens took over when I was incoming freshman and he was there all my four years. Just to be mentioned along with those guys is a great honor.”
