Kevin Hernandez is right where he wants to be – heading to San Antonio’s Regional IV Texas High School Track and Field Meet.
He will be running in the 800 meter and 3200 meter races for a chance to punch his ticket to the State Meet.
To qualify for the State Meet Kevin will have to finish in the top four.
It is Hernandez’s first appearance at the Regional Meet, but it’s been his goal to reach the competition since his freshman year.
Recently, at the Area meet held in Mercedes for District 31 and 32 5A schools Kevin finished second in the 3200 meter and fourth in the 800 meter.
“This is a meet I have been focusing on since freshman year,” Kevin said. “You know due to COVID last year everything was canceled.”
He said his freshman season he ran the mile and two mile race and he didn’t like his results after finishing last respectively.
It was the motivation he needed to get back on the track and work on his speed, and it worked.
Through out the season Kevin finished in the top spots in multiple track meets.
He knew he’d be back and sure enough his junior year he placed second in the 3200 meter race at the Area Meet.
“It was a huge improvement, a huge personnel record,” Kevin said. “I went from a 9 minutes and 47 seconds to a 9 minute and 32, so it was a big personal record, and I’m happy about that going to the regional track meet. Finally it was one of my goals. I am really happy with the results,” Kevin said. “And I’m heading to San Antonio.”
