Park scores 100th goal: Bravettes in the hunt for playoff berth

By RAUL GARCIA JR. | The Donna News

DONNA — Madalyn Park called for the ball.

Park, a Junior, was down field with one defender between her and the Yellowjackets’ goalie.

Park knew her next score would be her 100th for the Donna High Bravettes since joining the varsity team as a freshman.

Her teammate, mid fielder Nydia Selvera, looked down and made the pass to Park in transition.

Park quickly kicked the ball ahead of her and her defender.

And that was it, Park beat her defender to the ball, she kicked and scored her 100th goal for the team, and new school record.

Park began the season in December with 69 total goals made. And by March 5, she was eight goals shy of the 100 milestone against Brownsville Pace where she scored six in their 8-0 win on her 17th birthday.

“Reaching the 100 goals mark has always been a dream of mine,” Park said. “But I would not be able to have done it without my team and them having confidence in me. I want to thank them for helping me achieve that goal.”

The Bravettes (11-6-1), (6-4) would fall to the Yellowjackets 3-4. It was a game that would have secured a playoff berth for the first time since 2008.

Now they will have to win their next two games to secure a spot in the playoffs.

They host Brownsville Porter at home today at 5:30 p.m. Friday, and on Saturday travel to Brownsville to face Brownsville Veterans.

“We have a very important game against Porter that we need to win,” Park said. “We are very prepared.”

The Bravettes were defeated by Brownsville Porter in their last meeting 4-0.

The loss snapped their four game wining streak.

One of the wins included a victory over the best team in the District, Brownsville Lopez.

“We are coming for revenge,”Park said. “We have been practicing a lot on what cost us the games against them and Edcouch-Elsa. We have been practicing on what we need to fix to win and go to playoffs.”

Donna High Head Coach Norma Medina said the team has improved a lot.

“Jazmin Cedillo has made some huge stops, minimizing the points scored against us,” Medina said. “She came out big in our first round game against Edcouch and our second round game against Lopez.”

She said America Lara, Liliana Acuna, Isla Echavarria and Nydia Selbera have also made a big impact for the team.
