Epperson reflects on senior basketball season and 1,021 scoring record

Donna High Varsity Basketball Point Guard Eddy Epperson entered his senior basketball season not knowing if he would get the chance to lead the team one last time.

It was his senior year, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic still in effect no one knew if the basketball season would tip off, but it did and with a lot of changes. Players had to wear a mask, and the general public was not allowed into the gyms where games were held were just some of the changes.

“It’s my senior year and knowing we were going to have a season, well it felt good,” Epperson said. “All I was looking forward to was one last ride with my teammates. We wanted to make the best out of it and to try and win as many games as we could.”

The team went 5-3 in the first round of district play, and ended the season 12-8 overall and 10-3 in District 32-6A.

“It was pretty big my teammates gained confidence, and they took that into the second round of district,” Epperson said. “It felt good knowing they had confidence in themselves and when ever I gave them the ball they could knock down shots in crunch time or anytime throughout the game.”

At Brownsville Lopez Donna High’s Damian Fuentes gave the team the spark they needed to get the win.

“He came down and hit about three threes in a row,” Epperson said. “That fueled the team and gave us energy and we came out with a big win.”

Fuentes wasn’t the only one who had a big game for the Donna High.

Epperson scored 45 point against Brownsville Porter.

“I was just shooting and I knew I had the hot hand,” Epperson. “It was all thanks to my teammates for finding the open man.”

Those 45 points were just a handful of Eppersons’ all-time scoring record. He finished his senior year with a total of 1,021 point scored during his span on the varsity basketball team.

“It’s a pretty high accomplishment,” Epperson said. “My friends are happy for me, so it feels good knowing that they cared about it.”

It is not clear if he holds the school record for Donna High varsity basketball. However, the 1,000 scoring recored is not an easy feat to reach.

Epperson spent four season on the varsity.

“Taking it to the rack was not easy my freshman year,” Epperson said. “I was small and skinny, but behind the three point line was where I usually got my points.”

Standing at 5 foot 7 Epperson may have had a trouble scoring buckets attacking the hoop, but he was dangerous from downtown.

“Sometimes they would find me off a screen or we would be running a play and would be open, so I mean it was really both,” Epperson said about his scoring prowess.

“This season was a big differencee from past seasons,” Epperson said. “I know with masks you could get tired quickly. Wearing the mask was something we had to adjust to.”

Donna High made the playoffs for the second time in a row. They finished second in District 32-6A.

“I’m proud of my team,” Epperson said. “We could have gone farther and we all believe we could have played another game, but all good things come to an end.”

Donna High finished its season with a playoff berth that pitted them against Sharryland Pioneer Diamondbacks. The Diamondbacks defeated Donna High in the Bi-District Championship 63-55.

Heading into that game Epperson had already reached the 1,000 points scoring mark.
