Secondary teachers of the year nominees announced

The Donna School District announced on Twitter this week their three nominees for Teacher of the Year at the secondary school level.

Donna High School  math teacher Luis Briones enjoys coming to work to help make sure his students believe in themselves and are prepared to go to college.

“Kids come to school with a negative mindset that math is to challenging,” Briones said. “Every time we relate a problem to something they enjoy, that is when they become more interested in solving the problem.”

Ofelia Martinez of A.P. Solis Middle School has been teaching in the district for 40 years.

“I have students who have went on to become lawyers, dentists and engineers,” Martinez said. “It makes me feel good because I was their sixth grade science teacher and now they are adults.”

Veterans Middle School teacher Daniel Gonzalez was also nominated for Teacher of the Year.

“What I enjoy about teaching is seeing what the students learned first hand and how they apply it to real world scenarios,” Gonzalez said.
