Donna – Donna Independent School District (ISD) is slated to celebrate a significant milestone, with the groundbreaking ceremony for a new Outdoor Learning Space at M. Rivas Primary Discovery Academy. The event, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, marks the beginning of a series of construction projects funded by the district’s successful $120 million school bond proposal passed in May 2023.

According to a DISD press release, the ceremony will be hosted by key figures including the Board of Trustees, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Angela Dominguez, Campus Principal Ms. Rosalinda Navarro, and Hellas Construction’s Ambassador of Sales for South Texas, Mr. Joe Filoteo.

The $250,000 Outdoor Learning Space, the first of several planned for elementary campuses across the district, aims to enrich student education and well-being. Donna ISD’s commitment to providing diverse learning environments is driven by the numerous benefits of outdoor learning, which include:

  • Improved Academic Performance: Research indicates a link between outdoor learning and enhanced test scores, concentration, and creativity.
  • Increased Student Engagement: Outdoor settings can ignite curiosity and make lessons more engaging.
  • Physical and Mental Health Benefits: Time spent in nature is associated with better physical fitness, lower stress levels, and improved mood.
  • Enhanced Social Skills: Outdoor learning naturally fosters collaboration, communication, and teamwork among students.

In addition to the new Outdoor Learning Space, the $120 million bond will fund several other projects to upgrade Donna ISD facilities, including:

  • Classroom Wings: New wings at Donna North High School and Munoz, Garza, Salazar, and Singletary elementary schools.
  • Donna High School: A new cafeteria and additional classrooms.
  • Gymnasium and Library Upgrades: Improvements at A.P. Solis and Todd Middle Schools.
  • Campus Additions: Expansions at Veterans and Sauceda Middle Schools.

According to a release, ISD’s dedication to enhancing educational facilities reflects its broader goal of fostering an enriching and supportive learning environment for all students.
