DONNA — Weslaco East comes into town for a District 32-5A match up, and the Bravettes will be holding court at the Reservation.
Tip off is slated for 6 p.m. at Donna High. The boys varsity follows at 7 :30 p.m.
All year the Bravettes (22-11), (10-2) have been amazing with their high temp offense that has opponents guessing if they are going to attack the basket, connect from downtown, drop the ball down low into the post or make opponents pay with crafty give and go cuts to the basket.
Teams have had problems with the speed of Senior Point Guard Ivette Valladares. She is shifty with the ball and can change the direction of the offense with precision around the back or through the legs ball control dribbling. On defense she can make her opponent’s pay if they don’t take care of the ball or make a weak pass. Time and time again over the season she has stolen the ball in the passing lane or from her opponents and finished with a layup or assist.
Valladares and her senior teammates, Emily Jones, Yzella Perez, Danna Baez, Astrid Meza and Mia Pedroza and the team as a whole have been shredding teams all season.
Jones has been brilliant on both sides of the ball with her height and speed to block shots and get steals that have led to her finishing on the other end for two on the fast break. Defenders over and over can’t stop her shots around the basket and on defense have problems putting up shots over her because of her defensive presence.
Perez has been excellent all season with her shooting and attacking the basket off the dribble. She makes her defenders pay over and over when they guard her too close or from too far away.
Pedroza has been a good floor general bringing the ball down court and setting up the offense. She can make the quick pass or get around her defender to get a shot off.
And Baez and Meza have been productive all season on both sides of the court each helping add points to the score.
On Friday the Lady Wildcats will have a challenge and look for way to slow down the Bravettes who will be itching for a big win. During their last meeting the Bravettes defeated the Lady Wildcats 61-36.
The Bravettes were on a six game winning streak until losing for the second time to undefeated in District (12-0) Brownsville Veterans on Tuesday 57-42.
According to Bravettes Head Coach Lori Pedroza, The Bravettes look forward to the playoffs.
The Bravettes as they have secured the second spot of four teams who will advance into the post season from District 32-5A. Their last district game will be on the road against Mercedes on Feb. 8. heading into the playoffs.
